Tracy Helming's Violin Studio

DAILY PRACTICE  is essential for musical growth!  Please practice a minimum of 6 days a week.  Dr. Suzuki said, “You only have to practice on the days you eat!”.

How much should you practice?  Practice for the length of your lesson.  Pre-twinklers should begin by practicing a few minutes several times a day if you are so as to not overtire.  Try to be focused on accomplishing the goals on your practice sheet more than the number of minutes that go by.  Please feel free to add details from notes taken during class if the practice sheet doesn’t seem to require enough practice time.

LISTENING is the magical ingredient in the Suzuki method.  It is the parent’s responsibility to find and play the CD every day.  Try to spend some repetition on the repertoire your child is learning and polishing.  You can incorporate listening into some of your practice games (hold the violin up and focus on one spot while you play one piece on the CD, for instance).

TUITION:  Monthly tuition is due regardless of how many lessons you have been able to attend.  I always make up lessons that I have to cancel.  Please place payment in the envelope with your name on it at the beginning of each month.  Trading lessons with other students is a good way to solve schedule conflicts.  Make-up lessons for lessons a student needs to reschedule may be made during non vacation days between the hours of 10 and 2 p.m. at the teachers discretion.  There is a one time studio/accompanist fee of $75 which is due when you sign up for a fall lesson time.

The studio is open 12 months of the year.  2017-2018 tuition is $3180 per year for hour long lessons, $2340 per year for 45 minute lessons, and $1596 per year for 30 minute lessons.  Generally, I divide the total cost of yearly tuition into 12 payments and ask that each of these be paid at the beginning of each month.  However, you may also make full payment in September if this is more convenient for you.  If you choose to make monthly payments, tuition is $133 for 30 minute lessons, $195 for 45 minute lessons, and $265 for 60 minute lessons.  Tuition includes group classes and 40 private lessons held over the course of 12 months.

There are no refunds for missed lessons.

MAKE-UP LESSONS:  Make-up lessons a student needs to reschedule may be made during non vacation days between the hours of 10 and 2 p.m. at the teachers discretion.  Trading lessons with other students is a good way to solve schedule conflicts.  Lessons by Skype are also available.  This is a great way to not miss a lesson due to snow or inclement weather.

CELL PHONES:  Please turn your cell phone off during lessons.  I will do the same with mine!

ONE TEACHER FOCUS:  During the lesson, please do not comment, coach, or give suggestions to your child.  It is very important that they receive information from only one source during a lesson as it can be distracting and disturb the flow of the lesson when more than one person “teaches”.  If you have questions, please raise your hand, or save them for the beginning or end of the lesson.

COMMUNICATION:  Please feel free to call me or email me anytime you have questions or thoughts you would like to discuss concerning your child’s lesson.  I am always happy to hear how things are going at home, and want to work together with the parent to tailor each child’s musical journey to the individuality of the student and his/her family.

GROUP CLASSES:  Group classes serve to motivate as well as instruct each student.  We generally have two group classes each month.  Check the calendar page for a schedule of repertoire classes, technique/performance classes, and recitals.   Repertoire classes focus on the repertoire and building musicality.  Performance and technique classes focus on technique, games, and excercises that aim to advance playing ability.  Following the technique/warm-ups portion of class, students are encouraged to play a polished solo.  Pre-twinkle students meet from 6:45 - 7:00 p.m.  Book 1-4 students meet from 7:00-7:50 p.m. and Book 5-10 meet from 8:00-9:00 p.m. on group class days.  Group classes take place at St. Clement of Rome church, 1501 31st Avenue South.

Please plan on attending these regularly, and let me know if you cannot make it in advance.  I learn a lot as well from watching students perform and interact.  It is a great source of joy for me to work with students in a group setting!
